SUM HOSPITAL AND SUMUM ACTIVELY PROMOTING ORGAN DONATION

Bhubaneswar, April 19: Actively involved in promotion of organ donation, the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital and SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) here have been continuously encouraging family members of brain dead patients to donate body parts which could help critical patients to live.

A 50-year-old woman, Sanjukta Patra, who had suffered a brain stroke, was admitted into the IMS and SUM Hospital on April 12 last. She underwent emergency surgery but did not recover. She was subsequently declared as brain dead.

The hospital authorities then counseled her family members about donating her organs which could help other critical patients elsewhere to live. The family agreed to the suggestion and the hospital authorities then got in touch with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to take the matter forward.

Subsequently, her two kidneys and liver were harvested and sent to different hospitals where patients were awaiting transplantation.

While one of her kidneys was taken to the SUM Ultimate Medicare for transplantation on a patient, the other kidney was taken to the S.C.B. Medical College Hospital at Cuttack for another waiting patient.

The liver was taken to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for transplantation.

Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan has thanked the family members of the deceased for their noble act of donating the organs of the deceased.

Earlier in 2022, the parents of a young girl under treatment at IMS and SUM Hospital for brain tumour had decided to donate her kidneys following her death while family members of another person who was declared brain dead at SUMUM in June last year donated both his kidneys, lungs and liver which were flown out to cities outside the state.

After nine months, the family of another brain dead patient at SUMUM agreed to donate the liver and heart which were taken to Mumbai and Kolkata for patients awaiting transplantation.
